Rusia, a finales del siglo XIX. La actriz Irina Arkadina (Annette Bening) es una veterana y vanidosa estrella del teatro moscovita que pasa parte del verano en una idílica finca junto a un lago, propiedad de su hermano enfermo (Brian Dennehy). Allí compartirá los días con su amante, el escritor Boris Trigorin (Corey Stoll), su hijo (Billy Howle), aspirante a escritor, y la joven e ingenua actriz Nina Zarechnaya (Saoirse Ronan). Ellos, y un puñado más de personajes, sufrirán el fatal enamoramiento de la persona inadecuada. Adaptación de la obra teatral "La gaviota" de Chéjov.
